• Persephone
  • Oil & acrylic on boxed canvas 90cm x 120cm x 5cm
  • Persephone was carried off by Hades, the Lord of the Underworld. He burst through a cleft in the earth as she picked flowers and dragged her back to his realm. Here he tricked her into eating a handful of pomegranate seeds before releasing her to Hermes. It was a rule that whoever consumed food or drink in the Underworld was doomed to spend eternity there and so she was forced her to return to the underworld for a period each year and each time she did, the earth became a barren realm. This would become known as winter.
